Robert J. Braunlin, M.D.

   Robert J. Braunlin, M.D.

Robert Justice Braunlin, M.D., age 85, of Fort Wayne, IN, passed away May 29 surrounded by family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. As a physician, he served patients in Fort Wayne and surrounding communities for 35 years.

Bob was born and raised in Marion, IN and first met his wife, Roberta Husted, while at Marion High School.

He earned his BS in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and his Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University. During medical residency,  a research team asked for Bob’s help to design a device. He helped them develop the first fetal heart monitor that employed a scalp electrode, and solved the problem of separating the fetal electrocardiac signal from that of the mother. He became an Ear, Nose & Throat doctor and treated each patient with singular attention.

Inquisitive since childhood, he loved to learn and to teach others. His awe of the natural world was the portal through which he experienced God. He enjoyed creatively teaching others, especially his children and grandchildren, and celebrated in their discoveries. He served as an instructor for nursing students and medical residents. He enjoyed helping so many with homework and volunteered as a tutor through Study Connection.

A man of diverse interests, he was also a pilot, humorous poet, and computer enthusiast. He loved being surrounded by family, especially during vacations to the mountains.

He is survived by Roberta Husted Braunlin, his devoted wife of 62 years; daughters, Dr. Sue Ellen Braunlin (Dr. Ronald Reisman) of Indianapolis, Dr. Kathryn (Charles) Carboneau of Fort Wayne, Dr. Barbara (Dr. Doug) Conard of Lafayette; brothers William Braunlin of Bloomington and Dr. Earl Braunlin of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Elias Reisman, Marta Reisman, Russell (Whitney) Conard, Grace Conard, Emerson Conard.

The family would like to thank the Towne House staff and Parkview Hospice for their care and concern. Memorials to: the Alzheimers Association, Greater Indiana Chapter, 50 E. 91st Street, Suite 100, Indianapolis, IN, 46240 or charity of choice.

Dr. Braunlin was a godsend for my two children. They both had continuous ear infections and he diagnosed and surgically resolved their problems quickly. He never failed to clearly communicate with me, always wanting me to understand and even see (with the aid of his instruments) what he could see. I was so sorry to learn of his passing…he was a wonderful man and an outstanding physician. I am certain he touched many lives and will be remembered by many. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Roberta & family — So sorry to hear of Bob’s passing. It was a pleasure working with Bob for the many years we shared his medical practice. He always gave a 100% for his patients, never allowing a time clock to govern his time with his patients to interfere with a search for a cure for their problem. Hope is all well with you and your family

    Berton Bryan,
    Fort Wayne, Indiana
